Your safety comes first. Here's everything you need to know about using Hot Cold Coach safely.

Always consult your physician before beginning any contrast therapy routine, especially if you have existing health conditions.

Pre-Session Safety Checklist

Before every session, the app presents a safety checklist. Confirm:

  • You are well-hydrated
  • Your equipment is at the correct temperature
  • You have not consumed alcohol
  • You will listen to your body and exit if needed
  • You are aware of your health considerations

Never skip this step. It takes 10 seconds and reinforces good habits.

Health Conditions

If you disclose any of the following during onboarding, your protocol is automatically modified:

Heart Conditions

What changes: Lower heat temperatures, shorter heat phases, gentler cold exposure

Why: Extreme heat and cold create cardiovascular stress.

Recommendation: Get clearance from your cardiologist before starting.

Pregnancy

What changes: Significantly reduced heat exposure, shorter durations, moderate cold only

Why: Elevated core body temperature can be harmful during pregnancy.

Recommendation: Consult your OB/GYN. Many physicians advise avoiding saunas during pregnancy entirely.

Raynaud's Disease

What changes: Warmer cold targets, shorter cold phases, extended warming periods

Why: Raynaud's causes excessive vasoconstriction that can cause pain and tissue damage.

Recommendation: Monitor fingers and toes. Exit cold immediately if you notice white or blue discoloration.

Surgery Recovery

What changes: Reduced intensity across all phases, conservative temperature targets

Why: Post-surgical tissue needs time to heal.

Recommendation: Get clearance from your surgeon before resuming contrast therapy.

Epilepsy

What changes: Reduced thermal shock, more gradual transitions

Why: Extreme temperature changes can potentially trigger seizures.

Recommendation: Consult your neurologist. Never do contrast therapy alone.

General Safety Rules

Always

  • Hydrate before, during, and after
  • Listen to your body — exit if unwell
  • Have someone nearby or informed
  • Use a timer (the app handles this)
  • Start conservative (Week 1 exists for a reason)

Never

  • Use under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Fall asleep in a sauna or hot tub
  • Exceed recommended durations without medical guidance
  • Do cold water immersion alone in natural water
  • Ignore warning signs

Warning Signs — Exit Immediately

Leave the heat or cold immediately if you experience:

  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Nausea
  • Chest pain or pressure
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Extreme shivering that won't stop
  • Confusion or disorientation
  • Numbness in extremities
  • Heart palpitations
  • Vision changes

If symptoms persist after exiting, seek medical attention.

Cold Shock Response

When you enter cold water, your body's initial reaction is the cold shock response: gasping reflex, rapid heart rate, hyperventilation, and adrenaline surge. This is normal.

The voice coach guides you through it:

  1. Control your breathing — The gasping reflex subsides within 30–60 seconds
  2. Exhale slowly — Extended exhales activate the parasympathetic nervous system
  3. Stay calm — Discomfort peaks in the first minute and then reduces

Over time, the cold shock response diminishes. This is a sign your body is adapting.

Heat Safety

Signs of overheating: Feeling faint, nausea, excessive heart rate, headache

What to do:

  1. Exit the sauna immediately
  2. Cool down gradually (don't jump straight into cold)
  3. Hydrate
  4. Rest in a cool environment
  5. Seek medical attention if symptoms don't resolve within 15 minutes

Who Should NOT Do Contrast Therapy

  • People with uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • People with recent heart attack or stroke (consult cardiologist)
  • Pregnant women (consult OB/GYN)
  • Children under 16
  • Anyone currently ill with fever
  • Anyone under the influence of alcohol or drugs
